Geodes

Aim: To help the children: to know that the all powerful God loves them beyond measure, creating great beauty for them in unexpected places; to appreciate and love Him; and to choose to trust Him as beautiful Lord and Savior.

Verse Illustrated: Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

Presentation: Show a geode, discuss. Discuss God’s greatness and the privilege we have to be loved by Him.

Interest Getter: Show geode and ask what it is and how it was made.

Lesson: This is called a geode. Can you say that? Geode. It is a rock, dug up from the ground. No one knows what it looks like inside until it is split open. Then you can see the beautiful colors and crystals.

So why did God make such a lovely and surprising thing? I think He did it to please us! To show His great power and love for us. When you love someone, you love to do nice things for them and that is what God has done here.

How did He do it? Geologists tell us that in certain places, the rocks formed with gas bubbles in them. They usually had quartz, a special pretty rock inside, and as time passed and some water with minerals seeped into the bubbles, these crystals formed. The color depends on which minerals were there. If you go to the right places and know what to look for, you might even find one! Just look for a round rock….

The geode is the official state rock of Iowa. In Ohio, there is one the size of a minivan that you can walk into! People made it into a little museum.

Application: God filled the world with beautiful and amazing things when He made it. Keep your eyes open and you will see them everywhere. But you know the most amazing and beautiful one that He loves? It is you! He loves each one of you so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to earth to tell you (and me) about Him and to die in our place so that we can live with Him forever. Can you imagine such love?*

Conclusion: When you see a geode, think of God’s great and surprising love for us, and just love Him back! Let us thank God for His great love and power. (Pray).
